A Jewish translation of the Bible is an excellent translation for Biblical study from a Jewish perspective. Whether Jewish or Christian, this translation is very good and useful for comparing translations.

Regarded throughout the English-speaking world as the standard English translation of the Holy Scriptures, the Tanakh has been acclaimed by scholars, rabbis, lay leaders, Jews, and Christians alike. This translation (1985) represents more than a quarter of a century of intense collaboration between rabbis and scholars from the Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform streams of Judaism working side by side with scholars in the Semitic languages and biblical studies. The translators consulted the most ancient texts and the most modern commentaries in undertaking the awesome responsibility of preparing a text that would become a standard for the community. The Torah, Prophets (Nevi'im), and Writings (Kethuvim) are here in a single volume, incorporating the latest revisions.

Time
A landmark of Jewish religious scholarship. Turns Holy Writ into fresh, understandable, contemporary language.

Biblical Archaeology Review
Unrivaled as a precise and elegant rendering of the Hebrew text....Invaluable for both the casual reader and serious Bible students.

I'm on my third copy of the Tanakh since 1987, and have read it through several times. I'm a Christian, but when I read the Old Testament, this is the translation I normally use. It is modern, without being childlike, it speaks to me without talking down to me. Many translations are written for elementary school children, this one is writen for adults. The format on the page is easy on the eyes.

I normally like to balance my reviews with both good and points about the book I'm reviewing. I can't seem to find anything bad to say about the Tanakh. The hardcover I bought 15 years ago is a little warn on the edges but still in good shape. My previous soft cover was given away to a family member and my most recent copy is already dog-eared from use. The translators did an excellent job and the publishers ship a quality product.

I really enjoy this translation of the Bible. This is the first translation I've found that breaks the translation down into standard English paragraphs that read the way a story is expected to read. Most translations create a new paragraph for every 'verse' of every chapter. This translation instead makes most 'verses' into separate sentences as part of larger paragraphs. Even though it may not be a 'perfect' translation (I doubt there is such a thing, which is why people go back and study the original in the original language), it really is VERY good. Further, it is truly readable and enjoyable. I highly recommend this book

The TANAKH is the Jewish bible for the Jewish household. Simply put, this is the book that can be consulted in the best and worst of times, the words studied and heard. I bought the paperback to take with me when I travel.
