The Hebrew Text of Genesis

This is the complete Hebrew text of the Book of Genesis based on the Codex Leningrad. The verse numbers are written in Hebrew which uses the first nine letters of the Hebrew alephbet, א to ט, to represent the numbers 1 through 9. The letter י represents 10, the כ is 20, etc. The number 11 would be written as יא and 23 would be written as כג. The only exception to this numbering system is the numbers 15 and 16. Because יה and יו are a close resemblance to the name of God, יהוה, they are not used in Hebrew numbers. Instead, they are replaced with the טו and טז, respectively.

Word Morphology

When a word in the Hebrew text is clicked on, the word will be displayed in the far left column with its morphology (the formation of a word) written out with English definitions. Each English word is a unique translation for each Hebrew word, prefix, suffix, and verbal tense, mood and voice. English words beginning with an upper case letter are a translation of a Hebrew word while the words beginning with a lower case letter are prefixes or suffixes or identifies the verb’s tense, mood or voice. For instance, the first word of Genesis is בְּרֵאשִׁית and its morphology is identified as in~Summit. The word “Summit” (רֵאשִׁית) is the base word and “in~” is the prefix (בְּ). The second word in the Hebrew Bible is the verb בָּרָא. This verb is written in the perfect tense (identified by “did~”) and identifies the subject of the verb as third person, masculine and singular (“he~”). Definitions contained within quotations, such as “Avraham [Father lifted]”, are names.

Hebrew Dictionary

Each English word within the morphology (with the exception of names) is linked to the dictionary located below the morphology. The word is followed by a Hebraic definition for the word, the gender of the word and the Ancient Hebrew Lexicon of the Bible index number and the Strong’s Dictionary index number for further in-depth study of these words and their meanings.
