I am the Way the Truth and the Life
By Jeff A. Benner

"I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the father but through me."

The key word in this passage is the word "I". It is assumed that Yeshua is speaking about himself and that those who follow him will receive truth and life. But, is the "I" of his statement in reference to himself?

"Teach them the chuqiym (decrees) and the torot (plural form of torah - teachings) and make known to them the way they are to walk and the work they are to do." (Exodus 18:20)

Here we see that chuqiym and torah are the "way". The Hebrew word for "way" is "derek" and is literally a road and the Torah is a road that they are to walk.

"Your righteousness is a righteousness forever and your torah is truth." (Psalm 119:142)

Here we see that the "Torah" is "truth".

"For it (Torah) is not an empty word for you, for it (Torah) is your life and in this word you will live long of days in the land there which you are crossing over the Jordan to possess." (Deuteronomy 32:47)

Here we see that the Torah is their life and if they walk in this road of Torah they will live a long life in the land that God had promised them.

"In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God" (John 1:1)

So many times in the Tenach the words Torah (teachings) and Devar (word) are used synonymously and interchangeably. John is stating that both the word/Torah and God are one and the same. John then says in verse 14 "The word became flesh". Yeshua became the representative of the Torah of God, the torah came to life through Yeshua whose life paralleled Torah in every way.

When Yeshua used the word "I", he is not referring to himself but, instead he is representing the Torah of God. In light of this understanding we can translate John 14:6 as follows.

"The Torah is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the father but through Torah"
